What is Tadalafil?
Tadalafil Treats ED
Tadalafil is a treatment for erectile dysfunction sold in the United States and elsewhere in the world under the brand name Cialis. The drug was created by a partnership between GlaxoSmithKline and ICOS but is now marketed by Eli Lilly. In 2003, tadalafil received FDA approval for use in the treatment of ED.
Background on Tadalafil
In August 1991, GlaxoSmithKline began doing research on a drug in partnership with ICOS, a biotechnology company. They had isolated a compound known as IC351 which is a type of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) enzyme inhibitor in 1993. This was still five years before Pfizer would get FDA approval for their own PDE-5 enzyme inhibitor sold under the name Viagra.
At the time, the researchers did not fully understand the connection between the enzyme inhibitor and erectile dysfunction. However, they did begin to research the connection and began doing their own trials on men who were suffering from ED. These trials eventually became the basis for its approval by the FDA. In 2009, tadalafil also became approved by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The Chemistry of Tadalafil
When a man becomes aroused, an enzyme known as cGMP is released by the body. This enzyme causes the relaxation of smooth muscles within the penis; this relaxation allows the chambers of the penis to fill with blood. However, the PDE-5 enzyme reduces the level of cGMP in the body. When not enough cGMP is available, the muscles may not relax enough for the blood to enter the penis. Tadalafil works, therefore, by stopping PDE-5 for performing this function.
Another interesting aspect of tadalafil is that it remains effective in the body longer than the competitors. As a result, it is sometimes referred to as the “weekend pill.” Men can take the pill daily to achieve an erection whenever sexual stimulation occurs or can take it as needed and have the potential for an erection within the next 36 hours. Cialis & Tadalafil
Each dose of Cialis includes Tadalafil as its active ingredient. The daily usage Cialis comes in doses containing either 2.5 or 5 milligrams of tadalafil while the as-needed version of the drug contains 10 milligrams of the drug. Cialis also includes a number of inactive ingredients, such as hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, and several others. Some of these inactive ingredients are going to be different in the generic version but the active ingredient will be the same and will be available in the same dosages.
One different is, of course, the appearance. Cialis is notable because of its yellow coloring and almond-shape. The generic version is going to look different but is still going to provide the same effective treatment for erectile dysfunction at a lower price.
